Let's Make Magic together!

One of my favorite things is gathering with like-minded people who want to learn and grow. When I share how tarot can elevate their writing experience to an inspiring new level, the energy in the room prickles with possibility. Writers and Creatives feel more relaxed and rejuvenated knowing they have this accessible tool as a collaborative partner that will help them explore and expand their ideas. I offer a workshop geared toward character development and a presentation on using the tarot to inspire your writing. The very essence of the tarot is playful, which helps our angsty minds relax and the ideas to flow.

Why offer your co-workers or community this fun and unique learning opportunity?

It’s been proven that people who do so experience:

  • Skill development
  • Better communication
  • Better creative performance
  • Lower stress levels
  • A collaborative environment
  • More willingness to participate
  • Better problem-solving capabilities
  • An increase in productivity

A workshop brings people together. It allows them to brainstorm and learn from their peers as they ask questions and comment on their experiences. And who couldn’t use more magic in their life? Learn more below.

Magical Character Development

Once upon a time, I came across an interesting question: When writing a story, what is more important: creating great characters or a compelling plot?

Obviously, both are essential for good storytelling, but if I had to choose, I would be Team Character Development. When I read a book or watch a movie, I can forgive some plot holes, but the whole thing falls flat if the characters aren’t interesting, dynamic, or believable; is there anything more frustrating than a character thinking or acting in a way that doesn’t align with who they are?

Many helpful tools support character development, but using the Court Cards of the tarot is a magical option. I love sharing how these archetypal cards serve as a valuable resource for understanding the depths and nuances of various characters. This knowledge not only assists the writer in gaining a strong understanding of who they are but also provides valuable perspectives on their decisions and relationships with others.

Through discussions and writing exercises, we explore the roles that each personality type typically plays. By the end of the workshop, attendees will feel confident assigning a Court Card to their story’s characters. With a downloadable workbook, they will leave with a resource to help maintain their characters’ consistency throughout their story and for use in any future work.

This two-hour workshop consists of:

  • A teeny tiny Tarot 101
  • Understanding the Court Cards and applying them to characters
  • A workbook walk-through
  • Character arc changes

I have been honored to teach this class several times at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. No previous knowledge of the tarot is required! This workshop can be conducted in-person or virtually.

A four-hour combination of this workshop and Inspiring Your Writing with the Tarot is available upon request. Reach out for more details and pricing.

Are You a Writer?

You might not be an author of books or scripts, but many of us spend a significant part of our day putting words on paper (ahem, or a screen).

Writing is how we communicate to others and ourselves—those who want to write creatively pen books, scripts, newsletters, blogs, and proposals. Professionals write speeches, presentations, documents, proposals, reviews, and copy. Students crank out papers and painstaking dissertations. Many of us enjoy journaling or free writing.

Would you believe it if I told you that the tarot is a fantastic tool for any or all of these?

All writing begins with an idea. When the stars align, your thoughts flow easily from your brain to the page. Unfortunately, we aren’t always riding the Milky Way when called to create. A rough night’s sleep, stress, overthinking, too much coffee (or not enough!) –you know, just an average day in life- can leave us feeling stuck and uninspired. As a tool that helps us explore and connect with ourselves, tarot also encourages creative observation and thinking. Whether or not you understand a card’s meaning, the artwork alone can spark a concept or notion to share.

You don’t have to feel ‘stuck’ to reach for the tarot. Who wouldn’t want a collaborative partner to brainstorm ideas?

In this 90-minute presentation, I’ll cover:

  • What the tarot is…and isn’t!
  • A teeny-tiny Tarot 101
  • How tarot can help inspire character development and story ideas
  • How tarot can visually inspire
  • Tarot at the workplace
  • Tarot for journaling/brainstorming

I’ve had the fabulous opportunity to present this to the online Creative Mornings community. No previous knowledge of the tarot is required! This presentation can be conducted virtually or in-person.
